When Galileo, Europe's own global satellite navigation system, is fully operational, there will be 30 satellites in Medium Earth Orbit (MEO) at an altitude of 23 222 kilometres. Ten satellites will occupy each of three orbital planes inclined at an angle of 56° to the equator. The satellites will be spread evenly around each plane and will take about 14 hours to orbit the Earth. One satellite in each plane will be a spare; on stand-by should any operational satellite fail.

GIOVE-B transmitting its first signals 7 May 2008 PR 26-2008 Following a successful launch on 27 April, GIOVE-B began transmitting navigation signals today. This is a truly historic step for satellite navigation since GIOVE-B is now, for the first time, transmitting the GPS-Galileo common signal using a specific optimised waveform, MBOC (multiplexed binary offset carrier), in accordance with the agreement drawn up in July 2007 by the EU and the US for their respective systems, Galileo and the future GPS III.

Es basiert auf 30 Satelliten (27 + drei Ersatz), die in einer Höhe von rund 24.000 km die Erde umkreisen, und einem Netz von Bodenstationen, die die Satelliten kontrollieren. Taschenempfänger in der Größe eines Handys können aus den Funksignalen der Satelliten die eigene Position mit einer Genauigkeit von wenigen Metern bestimmen. Galileo ist für zivile Zwecke konzipiert und unterliegt nicht, wie das US-amerikanische GPS und das russische GLONASS, einer nationalen militärischen Kontrolle.Galileo wird das erste satellitengestützte Positionsbestimmungs- und Navigationssystem speziell für zivile Zwecke sein. Lediglich mit Hilfe eines kleinen Empfängers werden wir den eigenen Standort bis auf wenige Meter genau bestimmen können.
